During my process of creating a self- portrait, I started with sketching how I wanted my background to look, which I want to be filled with colors as it represents my vibrant personality. Colors, according Fox and Schirrmacher (2014), which provide different sensations to the eye, was the most important element of art that I used to represent this portrait. The different shades of colors such as warm colours were used for creating the face (lips, nose and cheeks) and cool colors were used more for the background. Light colors such as the yellow, blue and, orange created different moods such as calmness and relaxation and were used more so on the left side of the portrait which reflected the whole composition. I used complementary colors such as purple and yellow near each other to make a dramatic visual contrast. Also, by mixing the colors of blue and green together more shades of colors were added to the portrait to make it look visually intense. The value of the colors is different on the scale of lightness to darkness from having used very light shades of yellow than by adding water to the paint making it a darker shade of yellow. As an early childhood educator, I believe it is important that children explore with all different types of materials such as water paints and pastels because it encourages the child to make mistakes from trial and error through creating art and helps enhance their artistic abilities and skills.
It is very important to break down the steps into stages for children while creating art as it helps them understand how things were and how they become through the process of adding materials, paint and, shades of colors. As an educator, I believe that explaining the art lesson clearly by doing a practice example of each step helps the child understand the effectiveness of each materials and how they can use be used in different ways. Just as we can see from the self-portrait created by Hind, the first sketch which was done by a pencil looked completely different after she added different shades of colors and paint to her portrait which defined the two-dimensional picture.
